Gottlieb Muffat: Missa in F

Choralschola of the Wiener Hofburgkapelle, Elke Eckerstorfer

Missa in F

The tradition of combined organ and plainchant masses goes back a long time and was especially popular in France, Italy and throughout the Habsburg Empire at the end of the baroque era. The alternating roles of the organist and the choral singers were described in detail in the “Cérémonial de l´église” in 1662 and the practice was taken up by great organ masters such as Girolamo Frescobaldi, Nicolas de Grigny and Johann Kaspar Kerll.

Gottlieb Muffat was a student of the famous baroque composer Johann Josef Fux, a major persona in the history of the Imperial Court Music Ensemble. In 1717 emperor Karl VI engaged Gottlieb Muffat as organist at court, later he was appointed musical instructor of the imperial family. In the course of his career as organist with the Imperial Court Music Ensemble, Muffat composed numerous sacred works. With its artfully applied ornamentation and the additional toccata, the mass in F is a representative example of Muffat’s musical talent.
