Since its founding by Peter Burwik 55 years ago the ensemble XXI. jahrhundert represents a meeting between tradition and the present, artistic openness, and a lively dialogue with its audience and composers from around the world. With concerts on the international stage, numerous premieres and commissioned works, the ensemble is one of the most important protagonists of contemporary music in Austria.
In the Vienna Imperial Chapel the ensemble XXI. jahrhundert will turn its attention to masterpieces of chamber music from modern times. Some of the most fascinating sound creations of the 20th century will sound in the special atmosphere of this historic location, lending the works a particular intensity and immediacy.
Four Pieces for Violin and Piano, Op.7 by Anton Webern, with their highly condensed, expressionistic tonal language exemplary for the aesthetic of the Second Viennese School, constitute the prelude. They are followed by Alban Bergs Adagio, a piece of high lyrical intensity and emotional depth. Centrepiece of the evening is Olivier Messiaens Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps (Quartet for the End of Time), a monumental piece of the 20th century reporting on the apocalyptic end times. Written in 1941 as a prisoner of war, this work combines spiritual immersion with visionary soundscapes to form a vivid musical testimony of timeless actuality.
The performing musicians are Stefan Neubauer (clarinet), Bojidara Kouzmanova-Vladar (violin), Dorottya Standi (cello) and Le Liu (piano). Conductor: Peter Burwik.
