Johanna Doderer (*1969): Peace Mass
The contemporary composer, who now lives in Vienna, was born in Bregenz in 1969. She stud-ied composition and music theory with Beat Furrer in Graz and then with Erich Urbanner in Vienna, as well as film and media composition with Klaus Peter Sattler.
Her work includes chamber music, orchestral works and also music theatre. Johanna Doderer is particularly interested in opera: she has already written works for the Vienna State Opera, the Erfurt Theatre, the Gärtnerplatztheater (Munich) and the Theater an der Wien, among others.
After extensive study of the compositional techniques of contemporary music, Johanna Doderer has found her own compositional language, which draws its strength from the interplay with the boundaries of tonality, without excluding tonal music.
In 2014, Johanna Doderer was awarded the Ernst Krenek Prize, the highest honour bestowed by the City of Vienna on composers and music writers every two years.
With the Peace Mass, which was premiered in the Imperial Court Chapel on 28th of April 2024 as a commissioned work for the Vienna Court Music Ensemble, Johanna Doderer is now also de-voting herself to sacred music, which is occupying an increasingly important place in her work. Among other things, she has already composed a Salve Regina, as well as "Kyrie und Segen" for Seckau Abbey in 2023. The Peace Mass is the first commissioned mass composed by a woman in the more than 525-year history of the Court Music Ensemble.
