Missa brevis, F-Dur, KV 192
Mozart wrote the Missa brevis in F major KV 192 in Salzburg in June 1774. This early mass composition is remarkable in that it anticipates a much later work: the Credo-motive of the mass reappears as a prominent sequence in the final movement of Mozart’s last symphony, the “Jupiter-Symphony” KV 551. The Credo is in fact the major part of this mass, which is also the reason for its by-name “Small Credo Mass”. Most likely, this Missa brevis was intended for common Sunday service or minor festive occasions. Originally, it was orchestrated for a four part choir, soloists, strings and organ. However, Mozart later added three trombones and two trumpets, which gives the mass a more festive character. The Small Credo Mass, which was published in a printed edition in 1802, premiered at Salzburg cathedral. On 23 April 1824, it was performed at the Imperial Chapel by the Vienna Imperial Court Music Ensemble for the first time.
