Missa brevis, C-Dur, KV 258, „Piccolominimesse“
The history of Mozart’s mass in C major KV 258 is full of unresolved mysteries. It is not certain, how and why it received the name “Piccolominimesse”. We also do not know when it was written and on what occasion. The date on the original manuscript – December 1776 – is not Mozart’s own note – it was added later. Possibly the mass was already composed in 1775, together with the church sonata KV 263, for the Christmas celebrations of 1775 or 1776. The Piccolomini Mass is a short and festive mass, which was very common for masses celebrated at the Salzburg Court at the time.
