A scheene Leich (A Beautiful Corpse)

Die Strottern & Chor Kammerton

Conductor: Florian Schwarz

Thu, 6 November 2025, 7:30 p.m.
Vienna Imperial Court Chapel, Hofburg Schweizerhof, 1010 Vienna

‘Death must be a Viennese.’ Many Viennese songs express a rather special closeness to dying and death, always paired with a wink. In keeping with the season, shortly after All Souls' Day, an unusual concert evening is dedicated to this theme, hosted by the Kammerton choir and Die Strottern: ‘A scheene Leich’ is a journey through all kinds of morbid themes from the world of music – from Baroque classics to modern works, from romantic litanies to cultivated Viennese songs.

The theme has inspired countless artists and musicians, and Vienna’s contribution to it is a charming approach. In addition to John Dowland, Henry Purcell and Kurt Weill, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert and Wolfgang Ambros are also featured. Death as the ‘brother of sleep’ is addressed, as is the grumpy ignorance of dying in the Heurigenlied, and ice-cold and blood-curdling sounds can be heard alongside heavenly tones.

In the arrangements written especially by choir director Florian Schwarz, the rich sound of the choir blends with the guitar and violin sounds and the distinctive voices of the award-winning Viennese song duo Die Strottern. Expect surprises – many familiar melodies will be presented in a completely new style. And Die Strottern guarantee that you won't be left with a lump in your throat.
