Mass Nr. 1, d-Minor
Bruckner composed this mass in d-minor between May and September 1864. On November 20, 1864 he personally conducted its premiere in the old cathedral of Linz. Later he transposed the original organ solo of the Credo into a solo for two clarinets and two bassoons. On February 10, 1867 the mass was performed for the first time at the Imperial Chapel by the Vienna Court Music Ensemble – in fact this was the very first time a composition by Bruckner could be heard in this location. Soon after Bruckner received an appointment by the Imperial Court for further mass compositions. The mass in d-minor, which the composer described as “very serious and open”, seems to have been one of his favorites as the miserere-motive of the Gloria later reappears in his Symphony No 9.
