Missa in tempore belli, C-Dur, Hob. XXII:9, „Paukenmesse“
Haydn composed nearly all of his important masses for his patron Prince Nicolaus II. of Esterházy, most often on occasion of the Prince’s wife, Maria Josepha Hermenegild’s name day. The mass in C major Hob. XXII:9 is an exception: it was most likely commissioned by the father of Joseph Franz Hoffmann to celebrate his son’s first mass as ordained priest at the Piaristenkirche in Vienna, where it was thus first performed on 26 December 1796. The subtitle “Missa in tempore belli” (Mass in a time of war) refers to the fact that the mass was composed in a period of conflict between Austria and France. The by-name “Paukenmesse” developed out of the prominent kettledrum solo in the Agnus Dei section, reminding of cannon shots and war. The mass is characterized by Haydn’s virtuosic composition style and an overall agitated atmosphere that culminates in a beseeching plea for freedom.
